Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen people got wounded in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled following the explosion was found soon after. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location showed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official was convinced the blast had happened on a level above the access point and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to local news, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
