Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
The economist remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the company, and anticipate observing their advancement".
Summers, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public communications revealed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it accepted his determination to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the company commented.
Political Context
This development arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would require the US justice department to release its documents on the case.
The legislation will then proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he intends to approve the measure, after reversing his position on the matter following pressure from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those people.
The emails revealed that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often trying to introduce Summers to notable world leaders.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were shared with the public, he said he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided choice to continue interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild confidence and mend connections with the persons most important to me".
Professional History
The professor occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He headed Harvard from five years and continues to be a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties earlier on this week, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where he was a prominent member, verified that the economist was no longer affiliated with the institution.
Summers became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to remove its chief executive Sam Altman.
